Positives with the Internet and Growing Up The youth generation today uses the internet so much in their daily lives it has created an epidemic. The epidemic caused uproar of different ways of learning, communicating, teaching and even shopping or advertising done online. Technologies such as ipad, laptops and smart phones make internet access unbelievably easy. Since it is so easy, “Growing up Online”, a document by Frontline that aired on Januarary 18, 2008, claimed that the internet has caused many issues in the youth’s lives. One problem the internet caused stated in the documentary is, it is very hard for parents and authorities to regulate what kids do on the computer.
Summary: In the article “Online Friendship” wrote by Jan Farrington describes how the online touch the real life world, how teenagers use the Internet to keep in touch with their friends, and how to secure the information when the people spend time online. The most teenagers think social networking and IM are the easy way to help them stay connected and keep in touch with their friends, so they spend a lot of time linked in cyberspace or they use IM to keep in touch with their friends etc. For example: Lauren B said that attends in a high school she has so many friends, and she never saw each other during the day, so she and her friends used IM to everybody after school. Sometimes the parent worry about online world is talking over teen social life, and they bring the problem in their real life to continuous in the social life. For example Laurent B said that life online wasn’t always friendly, there were a lot of gossip.
The use of technology is affecting students especially in high school and college. According to Turkle, today’s college students have little experience with the right to privacy as they leave trails of everything they have done online, unlike previous generations who have worked hard to protect their privacy. In her article, Turkle also describes the use of online avatars as both a positive and negative image in children’s lives. Some children invest far too much time developing their online personality while role-playing offers a safe place in a world full of crime, terrorism, and drugs. As a consequence this retards their social growth
It has even reached to an extent that many authoritative figures ask parents to be careful and to monitor what their teenage children are doing online as well as encourage them not to let their children spend too much time on the internet. Although going online and surfing the web can be dangerous and risky, Rahul Parikh proves with evidence and statistics that it is not as dangerous as it is being seen, and it is actually good for teenagers to get on the internet and to be online. By analyzing the logic and reasoning of Parikh, the claim he suggests follows the same evidence that he exhibits in his article. He claims that “Fears of online sexual predators, cyber bullying, sexting, and other perils of the internet are overblown” (Parikh 1). In his article, Parikh explains to readers why his claims are true and also gives readers a logical explanation.
shows, vitiates the purity and innocence of young minds. On the internet, children under the age of 18 can enter adult websites; such as Xtube, Fakku, and Redtube. Sure they ask for the age when you first enter the site, but lying is always possible. Though many people argue that it’s up to the kids to decide what they want to watch the rated contents or not, but if there is no internet then the kids wouldn’t even be watching it in the first place. Maybe adult pornography sites don’t apply to every single kid, but how about the violent, gory, and explicit video games that elementary school children play?
To prevent these parents should be more vigilant and monitor their children’s access to the web. I would suggest children under the age of 14 shouldn’t be allowed to have internet facilities in their bedroom. More significantly there are parental controls on their computer that should be enabled. In my opinion Schools also have a vital part to play for example assemblies could be used to demonstrate and explain the potential dangers that some students could experience while browsing the web and safety in general. Statistics show that 60% of teenagers are exposed to some sort of cyber bulling.
Ranging from internet addiction, sexual predators, social issues, health problems, and information on subjects that people of certain ages should not find. Sue Scheff is effective in using ethos and pathos in her writing to convince teens and families that although the internet is a great place for learning and social interaction, there are still potential risks and dangers to it and for the younger generations to try to find balance between what’s real and what’s virtual. Scheff’s first issue on internet comes from spending excessive amounts of time surfing the web. If a teen focuses too much time on it, things such as school and social life take the backseat and the Net takes the wheel, resulting in addiction. In the article, “Addiction to Internet ‘Is An Illness’” from The Observer by David Smith, he provides some main internet addiction components, there are four; excessive use, withdrawal that includes feelings of anger, tension and/or depression if the computer is inaccessible.
Teenagers of America are obsessed with social networking sites and online gaming. Literally right this second thousands of little kids are becoming obese from little to no physical activity in their daily lives. Parents aren’t helping the matter either, whether it’s because they’re uninformed or they just don’t care about getting their children involved; they aren’t doing their jobs as parents of America. This is not teaching their children to grow up to be incredible leaders of our country. According to source A, “Community Service embodies experiential learning, locating a moral center, community health, because it is about empowerment and making the world a better place…” Yet, each day kids are becoming lazier and lazier because they don’t understand the importance of volunteer work and community service.
The extra stress of care and expenses can sometimes take a toll on the parents or caregiver which can lead to abuse. Also the condition of the child could prevent the ability to fight back or tell someone. People have to be extra mindful to look for signs of abuse and be extra supportive of the ones taking care of disabled children. Due to advances in technology, children are susceptible to internet predators. Children are meeting sexual predators on the internet and forming relationships with them and unknowingly allowing them into their lives.
Americans let children of the age 7 or less play with a tablet or an iPad instead of taking them to the park to play. That it gets to the point that the children of such young age are asking for the technology to be entertained instead of going outside. Thus putting the blame on the parents since they as well are on their own device taking the easy route for their children. Considering in today’s world parents are able to access any social media at any moment on their smart phone and hear stories of children going missing and all these horrific events going on. Parents worry more and become overly protective over their children.
