Explain why the Weimar Republic faced problems between 1919 and 1923 The Weimar Republic faced problems between 1919 and 1923 for many reasons, including several uprisings, hyperinflation and the French occupation of the Ruhr. At the beginning of 1919 the new German government were already very unpopular because they signed the armistice at the end of 1918. Many Germans were appalled by this decision, as they believed that they could have won the war because they were so near Paris. The soldiers felt as if they had been betrayed. Stabbed in the back. In reality the Weimar government had no choice but to sign the armistice as if they did not Germany would have been invaded by the allies the next day. This was a problem for the government as the people of Germany were starting to hate their government more and more. The problems continued into 1919 with the Spartacist uprising in. This was an uprising by a group of communists led by Rosa Luxembourg and Karl Liebknecht. They tried to start a communist revolution in Germany but it was crushed by the Freikorps, a group of ex-German soldiers hired by the government to put an end to the uprising. This was a problem for the government because it showed that it was under threat and it also made the government look weak because they could not stop the uprising themselves and had to hire the Freikorps to do it for them. This also lead to them becoming more unpopular. Later in 1919 the Weimar government signed the treaty of Versailles. The treaty had some appalling things in it such as the war guilt Claus, which meant that Germany had to accept that the war was all their fault and huge reparations also had to be paid. The German people hated the Weimar Republic even more after this because they were disgusted that their government accepted the awful terms of the treaty.
