Problems Faced in Polygamous Families in Rural Areas of Cameroon

Polygamous marriage is very common in rural areas of Cameroon. Having more than one wife is viewed as a sign of wealth and prestige particularly amongst those still living in rural areas. Polygamy is common in rural areas because most women don’t go to school and they look at marriage as their biggest achievement in life. There are more women than men living in rural areas and that is why some men even marry up to 5 wives. There is lack of love and affection in this marriage and the main idea is to have children and sexual satisfaction. Most men who don’t want to have one wife would prefer to have from three wives and above because, they believe that marrying more than two wives, the tendency to compare amongst themselves would be eliminated. Polygamous men always have a way in which they structure their compounds with each wife having her own unit in which she lives with her children. I have experienced all kinds of problems in the polygamous family as my father has five wives and thirty two children. There are numerous problems faced in polygamous families and the problems can be grouped under the following types of categories; attention, financial difficulties, perceptions of the first wife, relationship between wives and children, the race between the women to be the favorite in the man’s family, the man’s view about his children’s upbringing. Attention in a polygamous family is one of the things that cause the greatest problems. It is almost impossible for the man to pay attention equally to all his wives or to all his children. Each wife has her own day or days to sleep in the man’s unit and if the man spends more days with a particular wife, it is always a big problem amongst the wives.
