Problems Faced by Older Workers

In the webinar, Maximum Value: Making the Older Worker a Competitive Advantage by Dr. Peter Cappelli, talks about the issues of older workers. Dr. Cappelli says that it all begins with the changing demographics. People now are not only living longer, they are living healthier as well. This causes a change in the work environment. As people are getting older they like to keep working in order to have money for their needs. While some want to work because sitting around is boring for them. According to a survey presented in the webinar, 84% of the older workers said they would work even if they are fit for life. They said, they want to stay active by working, even if not for the money. About 75% of those workers approaching the retirement age say they want to keep working, but of those only about half of them actually work. Out of those percentage a few of them are able to find new jobs. If the older workers decide to relocate, the main problem for them is the age discrimination. The most common issues for older workers is the age discrimination and that they cost more in healthcare. It is now considered by many employers that older workers are old and can’t do the same amount of work as younger workers do in comparison to speed and efficiency. Age discrimination has become more common in the work force. Older workers are considered as having skills out of date. It states in the webinar that about 67% of older workers have experienced or seen age discrimination. There were about 25% of the employers that said that their organization is reluctant to hire older workers. Majority of IT employers said they wouldn’t hire anyone over 40. Dr. Cappelli, gives an example of himself and his kids by saying that even though his kids are younger and from this technology generation, they still come for help to him.
