Problem Caused By Drug Trafficking In the United States John Lewis Clark ENG 122: English Composition II (ADE1246A) Instructor: Kari Lomanno December 17, 2012 According to Jenner (2011) “drug trafficking is the most crucial and dangerous phase of the illicit drug market." Quick illegal earning of money is the main source that drives the illegal drug trafficking market. Drug Trafficking is an international business that has generated over $500 billion a year and has sustained itself for over forty years. Drug trafficking is global and has affected health care, productivity costs, costs to the United States society and caused death. Many laws have been enacted to fight the war on drugs. However, according to Brown (2004) President Reagan and Congress enacted the Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1986 that increased taxes on imports from countries that did not cooperate with the United States to stop drug imports into the United States and to seize the assets of drug offenders. In this paper drug trafficking is defined. Second, the cost associated with drug trafficking in the United States and other countries is highlighted. Third, drug trafficking laws and violations are described. Fourth, links between drug trafficking and violence is explained. Fifth, the eradication of drug trafficking through education as well as several successful programs are explored. The research paper posits that being able to eradicate drug trafficking would greatly reduce violence throughout the world. Drug trafficking is defined as the act of transporting a large quantity of illicit drugs and legal drugs for illicit uses or controlled substances with the intent to unlawfully sell, distribute, or deliver.
