Marijuana is classified by the FBI as a Schedule 1 Narcotic placing it in the same category as heroin, LSD, and MDMA (Ecstasy), classifying it as the most dangerous of drugs with severe physical and psychological dependency with no acceptable medical uses(1). Yet 43% of Americans admit to having tried it at least one time (2). Should we all be writhing on the ground waiting for our next fix? If nearly half the country has tried this drug with such a devastating effect, how are we not falling apart at the seams? It seems that the 420 crowd is doomed to a life in a downward and drug addicted spiral of self-destruction. But, in recent years it seems that scientific research may give them a second chance and shatters the governments’ seemingly unchanging and demonic depiction of a drug could actually help many Americans. Researchers have made available many new articles comparing the demon drug against many substances of we consume every day. Substances that include caffeine, alcohol even cigarettes. There was a study published in the New York Times compared the addictive effect of marijuana, caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, cocaine, and heroin. The study found that in the marijuana was actually less addictive than our daily cup of coffee (3). Which isn’t all that surprising when you think about it, when I don’t get my coffee quota in I have a massive headache by 2pm. The harmful effects of smoking marijuana have actually shown to be less harmful than that of cigarette smoke. The study published in the Harm Reduction Journal stated that the protective effect of the active ingredient in marijuana (THC) exerts a protective effect against most carcinogens, where nicotine activates particular carcinogens potentially increasing their harmful effects (4).
