For example Laurent B said that life online wasn’t always friendly, there were a lot of gossip. So using social networking and keeping in touch with friend online is the good thing, but they still have some trouble when the teenagers spend too much time. Response: According to Jan Farrington in “Online Friendship” research about the socials networking and connecting friends online. She explains more about the positive sides, but I think that they still have some negative sides. For example: In my country have a lot of place for rent computer to go online.
Cyber bullying is worse than normal bullying because it occurs on the internet, which is a much larger scale. The internet has become very common in today's society. It has played a major role in the social lives of many children. They are able to shop, communicate, and make good friends just by using the internet. People are also able to distribute information to a lot of people in very little time.
The Internet has helped reading to evolve. Who would want to wait around for a newspaper or a magazine to come out when clicking on just one link brings the latest news up with in seconds for reading pleasure. Carr says, “It was Hungry” (Carr16).What he is trying to say is that after using the internet his brain is constantly searching for new information. The more he used the internet to gain information or to read, the more his brain wanted new
As Carr proves throughout his book, the brain is able to be altered and changed. Neurons in the brain are always taking on new functions and are reprogramming themselves. The Internet is a major factor in the dramatic changes being made in brain functions today. The short and easy-to-read pages of the Net can increase the brain’s tendency to skip and skim, and people are losing the ability to remain focused long enough to read an entire book. The short story “Coming to an Awareness of Language”, by Malcom X, demonstrates how reading in great depth expands knowledge and opens new worlds.
Is the internet making us stupid? That’s the great controversy in our society these days. Believe it or not internet is making us more and more lazy by the minute. Not to mention that, it distracts us from what we’re really supposed to be doing, but also it has slowly downgraded our intelligence. By all means, internet has been a blessing, however, in the same way a knife to the way we’re thinking.
Ranging from internet addiction, sexual predators, social issues, health problems, and information on subjects that people of certain ages should not find. Sue Scheff is effective in using ethos and pathos in her writing to convince teens and families that although the internet is a great place for learning and social interaction, there are still potential risks and dangers to it and for the younger generations to try to find balance between what’s real and what’s virtual. Scheff’s first issue on internet comes from spending excessive amounts of time surfing the web. If a teen focuses too much time on it, things such as school and social life take the backseat and the Net takes the wheel, resulting in addiction. In the article, “Addiction to Internet ‘Is An Illness’” from The Observer by David Smith, he provides some main internet addiction components, there are four; excessive use, withdrawal that includes feelings of anger, tension and/or depression if the computer is inaccessible.
The introduction of computers to our family life helps us come together and spend more quality time together. The list can go on, but with all these opportunities we have, we also lose a lot. We lose privacy and security. There are also some greater drawbacks when it comes to the net, like Internet related crimes. My mom and dad both conduct business at home, and I do all my school assignments.
Life has distinctly undergone some very dramatic changes ever since the dawn of the Internet era and with each passing day there is a growing dependence on it. People start to rely on the accessibility of information on social media, we rely on the internet to give us answers and retain information. Social networking including Facebook, twitter, blogs and even You Tube play a role in our education. Students who attempt to multi-task, checking their social media sites while there are studying or working on a paper lose their ability to perform the task on hand and their concentration by these distractions, I know this to be true because I can admit that I too have looked at Facebook and the internet for distractions while writing this paper. Another problem that social media creates another way for people to bully or have access to emotionally abuse others.
Kirsten Laman ENGL 1301-61507 Professor Jackson 30 October 2014 Cognitive Effects of the Internet The book The Shallows by Nicholas Carr states that the introduction of the internet into society has had a profound effect on our culture. In other words, the internet has affected the way people think, read, and remember. The rapid access to tons of information has also affected people’s behavior making them less patient and less productive. According to Carr, “The Net commands our attention with far greater insistency than our television, or radio or morning newspaper ever did” (117). In today’s world, the internet has become essential to work, school and entertainment.
Social issues A major social issue in my generation is technology such as cell phones, computers, tablets etc… The 2000’s is mainly based off of social media like the wide spread of “My Space and other cites that connect you with people around the world. I think we all spend way too much of our time entertaining other people. Social media is not being used in the right way, which I think its harming people. Certain things should be monitored more closely especially pertaining to people of a younger age group. All of this technology is really hurting people and not actually helping them.
