A person with dementia is often frustrated, sometimes angry, and we need to realise this as part of their condition, and that we should not react in a way that would provide further anguish to them. They may also act inappropriately towards you or others. It can be difficult for them to understand that this is not appropriate, so the carer must diffuse the situation calmly and discreetly. If possible, people should observe active listening in all situations where communication is taking place. People communicate with their spouses, children, friends or coworkers without providing much thought, or opinions to how they have been doing. It may seem to be simple; however, precise communication requires finesse, which are selection of exact terms, listen to others with hearts, and insights of messages across. On the other hand, communicators may have quite different backgrounds, and personalities, therefore have a tendency to approach others in their own disparate communication styles. These differences can result in serious miscommunications, which can cause to disagreements at home, or in social surroundings.

Another barrier would be first language. a person who may not speak English very well or the language used in the certain country may find it difficult to communicate for a health care professional it may be helpful to use a translating dictionary or a translator within the setting. If the patient can speak a little English it may be helpful to use simple slows and slow speech. Emotional intelligence is another barrier within the health and social care setting. If an individual doesn’t have the emotional intelligence it may be hard to express what they are trying to say or even understand the other person’s feelings.

In face to face communication the person listening may not always indicate verbally if they have understood or agree.
