Principles of Communication in Adult Social Care Settings 1.1. Identify different reasons why people communicate. * To share/express ideas, emotions, needs, memories, wishes and preferences. * To share information. * To get to know each other and connect with each other. * To be accepted in a social setting. * To give instruction, give guidance and pass on knowledge. 1.2. Explain how effective communication affects all aspects of working in adult social care settings. In an adult social care setting effective communication can mean the difference between concise record keeping, high quality service provision, staff being able to work together as a team and creating an empathetic approach to service users and their significant others with a shared understanding of types of care and assistance required. Enabling staff members to encourage clients’ participation in social exercises and activities, as well as being able to gain their trust and give the right support as and when required. 1.3. Explain why it is important to observe an individual’s reactions when communicating with them. Being observant of the service users body language and facial expression is an important part of communicating effectively, enabling service providers to assess what the client is trying to express in order to meet the individuals needs. It can also be an important tool in identifying any changes to the service users needs. 2.1. Explain why it is important to find out an individual’s communication and language needs, wishes and preferences. It is important to know how to communicate with each person to ensure that they are understood and their wishes, preferences and needs in their daily life are met so that they can enjoy activities, feel included in social situations and be able to be supported in their daily life, to avoid the service user becoming
