Pride and Prejudice By: Jane Austen Originally published in 1813 Part I. Factual Summary Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen starts out with finding out that a wealthy man named Charles Bingley has rented out a manor near the Bennet family. The Bennet family has 5 girls, all unmarried. There’s Elizabeth, Mary, Kitty, Jane, and Lydia. Mrs. Bennet is determined to have one of her daughters marry Charles. Later in the book, they family attend a ball where Mr. Bingley is present. He spends a lot of time with Jane, and takes to liking her a lot. Charles close friend Darcy refuses to dance with Elizabeth and so the family views him as obnoxious and full of himself. The days go by and Jane goes to visit Charles manor. It starts to rain on her way there, though, and she gets sick. Liz goes to take care of her, and when she gets there Darcy starts paying a lot of attention to her. When the girls get home Mr. Collins, a clergyman, who is suppose to inherit the Bennet property when Mr. Bennet dies, is at there house to visit. Unexpectedly, Mr. Collins proposes to Elizabeth. She turns him down. Elizabeth becomes friends with a militia officer, Wickham, while he’s stationed near her town. He tells her how Darcy is malicious and tricked him out of his inheritance. When winter comes, Charles and Darcy move, which shocks Jane. The Bennet family is more shocked when they find out that Mr. Collins is engaged to Charlotte, Liz’s best friend. Charlotte explains to Elizabeth how she needs to marry him for financial reasons. She’s only the daughter of a local knight. Jane is still hoping that Mr. Bingley will visit her. Instead she gets a visit from Miss Bingley. At this point the chance that the Bennet girls will get married are slim. Elizabeth pays a visit to Charlotte, who lives near Darcy’s aunt. While there she bumps into Darcy who starts visiting more often because of her
