Prevention of Bullying in School According to recent statistics “77 percent of all students being bullied in some way or another include mental bullying or even verbal abuse. Out of the 77 percent of those bullied, 14 percent have a severe or bad reaction to the abuse” (http://www.bullyingstatistics.org) Bullying is not a person, it’s a behavior. Bullies bully for many reason; (a) they get attention for negative behavior (b) they are having issues at home (c) they are a victim of bullying themselves. In order to find out if bullying is taken place in any school, school personal must first identify what bullying is. There are two types of bullying. The aggressor is purposely hurting the person and is doing it repeatedly. Bullying can have a negative impact on a student’s ability to learn. Bullying can best be prevented with the implementation of a complete bullying intervention program that offers early identification, prompt response and maintenance components; it will help children involved become both safe and successful. “Adults underestimate the rates of bullying because kids rarely report it and it often happens when adults aren’t around” ( http://www.stopbullying.gov) Looking at bullying through surveys can help schools find out how often and where the bullying is taken place, how the school personal responds to it, how the students feel about their safety and what type of bullying is taking place in the school. When creating a survey it is important to ensure all those completing will be 100 percent privacy. Surveys should be given out at the beginning and the end of the school year and based on the results from the survey a clear prevention and intervention policy should be in place and ready to enforce. According to the U.S Department of Justice, “37 percent of students have reported that they do not feel safe at school because of the bullying.” When
