Just like how Frederick was in when he arrived at Abu Ghraib prison. As he recalls on his first day there, detainees were “naked, handcuffed to their door, some wearing female underclothes”(385). So there was already abusive behavior taking place toward the prisoners before Frederick arrived at Abu Ghraib. Even tho Fredrick has admitted to doing wrong, we can not blame him or the other guards for doing what they did because who knows if we would of acted any different if put in the same situation. The people really responsible for the abuse that should be bought to justice is “in the upper tiers of the military chain of command and its civilian leadership; they’re in the White House...today walking around free” while Frederick is living the prison
They do not understand that people with mental disorders have special needs which prisons cannot provide. In the state of Pennsylvania, the Governor thought in was necessary to close most of the treatment centers which were equipped and properly trained to handle these types of individuals. This was part of a strategy to save money by placing them in prisons. This not only causes a problem with over population, but it adds an unnecessary level of danger to prison workers. In the Lancaster County Prison, approximately 40% of the fights that break out involve inmates that suffer from some type of mental illness.
This problem exists because there are not enough programs to help inmates be reformed and the little programs that are available they are implemented only after the inmate is released and not in the prison itself. This problem has been around since prisons were created and is a growing problem today. This problem needs to be addressed before it gets way out of control. There was a study offered by the Pew
Carl demonstrated meager planning, implementation, and unwieldiness to follow-through with his assigned duties. It appears that Carl Robins is not qualified or trained properly to do his job successfully. This issue may have been averted by establishing a systematic leadership and mentoring plan by ABC, Inc. to train and advise their new employees. Several issues stand out immediately. New employees did not have the required forms completed and their transcripts were not on file.
If someone can get 7 innocent men to confess to a murder that they had nothing to do with I lose a lot of faith in our justice system. If this is true and the men were innocent it makes me sick to my stomach to think that 7 grown men will confess to something that they had nothing to do with in order for the interrogation to be over. That is not how justice is served, I believe serving justice is doing the right thing, telling the truth and finding the truth through facts and rational means. After seeing this movie I think trapping someone in a room for 8 or more hours and interrogating them with no lawyer present is completely irrational and by no means finds the truth. Justice absolutely cannot be found through these techniques because threatening someone and forcing them into a scared confession is no way serving justice.
Together these factors have dramatically altered the nature of day-today prison life and inmate culture. Today’s prison life is much better than past times. I think it’s barbaric that prisons used to torture their prisoners, and they had no say in anything. Although today’s prisoners still don’t have much of a say in what occurs inside prison, they know they won’t get tortured like prisoners in the past. I’ve always heard that during the Industrial Revolution, many prisoners were used as free labor, but I never realized how much money the prisons actually made from this kind of labor.
The workers were not visiting the clients on a weekly basis as mandated by DCFS and paperwork was consistently late. There was chronic absenteeism, a high level of turnover, low morale, and low job satisfaction among the employees. All of the above issues adversely affect the level of care and services being provided to the client. How can Hull House Association communicate change in an effort to increase employee satisfaction and organizational productivity? Hull House’s leadership was not supportive of staff at that time.
An ongoing concern is that officer’s power has seemed to be almost eliminated and that causes problems with inmates and hostility amongst staff. Inmates refuse orders and challenge officers because he or she is aware that the officer cannot initiate a write up or lock down without involving supervisors and following a specific protocol. At times it seems that inmates have more rights and respect than officers so it is important to appropriately handle these frustrations and not let it affect his or her personal lives. Some individuals become officers because of inadequacies he or she has not dealt with or power and control issues instead of love for the position which can be
It’s difficult enough to get them to do tasks alone, and teaming them up with a group of people usually has a negative outcome. Additionally, they’re typical loners who tend to stay to themselves and are isolated from the world in one way or another. Moreover, they have very bad attitudes towards everyone and never want to participate in company functions, or could care less about completing a task or an assignment they’re working on. Furthermore, the lack of interest affects not only them, but their counterparts as well; whatever they don’t accomplish has to be done by their colleagues. Finally, the uninterested fellow workers appearance is not important to them, possibly resulting in low self-esteem, helping explain the way they
Why is the use of exclusive coercive power an ineffective and impractical method of operating a prison? What tactics would you employ instead? Why? The use of coercive power in prisons is ineffective because some prisoners see no reasons why they should have to comply with what prison staff may want them to do. Most prisoners do not expect to really have to do anything out of the ordinary schedule and see no reason why they should help the prison staff.
