According the (NCADI) National Clearing House for Alcohol and Drug Information 2008, opioids are the drug of choice for most prescription abusers. This type of drug contains opiates which can be found in heroin, one of the most addicting drugs on the black market and has severe side effects or withdraws. The medical term for this pill is oxycodone or oxyontin in generic form. These pills range from 5mg. to 180mg. in strength which could cause an overdose on a single pill if you were a first time user. Oxycodone or oxycontin, serve as a pain medication that when taken exactly as prescribed by a licensed pain specialist can effectively change the way a person experiences pain and rarely leads to an addiction. The NCADI goes on to say that one of the favorite ways for abusers to experience this medication is to crush it and snort it like cocaine which in many instances leads to overdose. Oxycodone is a slow release medication made to have some delayed absorption so the patient may be without pain for longer. Snorting it leads to rapid absorption that can have devastating results even leading to death. The NCADI shows a national survey from 2008 that states an estimated 6.9 million persons, or 2.8 percent of the population, aged 12 or older had used prescription psychotherapeutic medications non-medically in the month prior to being surveyed. Maybe their experiencing an emotional breakdown, or do they like to get high? I researched a book called,” How to say no to drugs”, by Damian Kreske, New York Facts on File, Inc., 2008. What I found shocked me. When students were asked why they chose to do drugs, this was some of their responses. One teen stated that they liked the way it felt. Another had been violently raped and said the drugs help her cope with that pain. In all the majority of the teens at the high school level had tried drugs because some of their friends were doing it. Sometimes as parents we forget the tremendous pressures of being a teen and growing up with people that are mean and have no guidance in their life. The best way to combat the differences of our teenage kids is to be involved. Get to know your children on a personal level. One thing most kids like is sports. Let them try out for a local baseball or football team. When a child has something that is important to them in their life, they are forced to make decisions. This is a good thing because these activities may very well be more important than drug use. Talk to your kids when there has been a traumatic event in their life. It could be the loss of a loved one that was close to them or a bully at school that relentlessly attacks them on a daily basis. Explain to them that drugs are not the answer to the pain they feel.
