Prescription Medication and Depression Is prescription medication the best way to treat depression? This topic can be argued all day long by doctors and psychiatrists as well as the non-clinical population. You will always hear two sides to this argument. Some doctors and psychiatrists will argue that a good way to treat depression is in the form of medication. Other doctors and psychiatrists will argue that counseling is the best way to treat depression. There could be a good argument to both sides. My opinion on the issue is that counseling and other alternatives should be attempted before any medication is prescribed. A mixture of medication at a low dose and counseling could be effective, but my opinion is that the person should eventually be taken off the medication and continue the counseling. I am not a believer of medication to treat depression, but I know that the medication could help when the person first starts treating the depression. I believe that counseling and other alternatives is the best approach to treat psychological issues that a person is dealing with. Depression Depression is a mental state characterized by a pessimistic sense of inadequacy and a despondent lack of activity. Some people say that depression feels like a black curtain of despair coming down over their lives. A lot of people that are depressed feel like that have absolutely no energy and they cannot concentrate. Depression can make you feel irritable most of the time. The symptoms can be different based on the person. Once these feelings start interrupting your daily life, you could be what is referred to as clinically depressed. Usually, if a person goes through one episode of depression they will most likely encounter depression again later on in life.
