The word “Nigger,” used for a member of any dark-skinned race of people and is often known for being offensive, is used over two hundred times in Huckleberry Finn. The word fuels and contributes to black people’s feelings of low self-esteem and to white people’s disrespect for them. In the classroom, while reading Huckleberry Finn, students do not want their differences highlighted to their fellow classmates. Huckleberry Finn accentuates their one difference that is always apparent, which is the color of their skin. People against the use of Huckleberry Finn in the schools believe black children are offended by the use of the word “nigger’ anywhere, no matter what the teacher uses to justify it.
Discrimination can be direct or indirect, verbal abuse and unwanted physical contact. An example of direct discrimination would be: If a black employee is not selected for promotion because of his race. An example of indirect discrimination would be: An apartment stores prohibits all employees from covering their head up however this rule means people(s) with religious beliefs who are required to cover their heads are prevented working for the store. This would be indirect discrimination unless the store can find an objective reason for justifying the policy. Characteristics protected by the Equality Act 2010 are as followed: •
Secondly, the white people thought they were inferior and so they felt no shame in making fun of them at minstrels. 2. Source 4, an advertisement for watermelons from 1918 shows many stereotypical characteristics about African Americans. One view displayed is that black people are not worthy enough like the white people are in the fact that they have to “eat seeds ‘n all” because they are not wealthy enough to afford decent food. This is also conveyed through “Piccaninny Freeze” because the child is cold due to the fact she isn’t wearing any clothes.
2/14/12 Stereotyping 101 In today’s society people tend to stereotype in a few ways like read others as soon they walk by or like the Nazi in WWII where feeling superior was the tick and just feeling the differences between cultures. Some people today can’t even be friendly and say “hello” or a simple “hi”, people just look and judge what others do and how they act just by the way they dress or look. Stereotyping is one thing that everyone does, if someone tells you that they don’t then that’s a lie because everyone does even when they don’t notice it. All cultures do it the Mexican culture, African- American, Americans, Cubans, and Asians and for each culture some stereotyping is little a different. One example is in my family the Mexican
Crain 1 Black is the New White Does a new attitude change your skin color? The phrase, “acting white” is used to degrade another race because of speech, appearance, intellectual thought, and the crowd that people decide to hang with on a daily basis. People that are not on the same level of intelligence as others get insulted and that’s when “acting white” becomes a bad thing. Then, people give black people this image, that everyone seems to think all black people have to look up to black in society. Such as; non-correct usage of English, can’t speak English, do not own any dress clothes, cuss, men wear baggy jeans, women wear tight clothes, no job, don’t read books, and the list goes on past the general observations.
Most of society isn’t comfortable with people who get tattoos, piercings or with people who dye their hair or style it different ways than “normal” people. Those people are known as nonconformists. In Logan Fey’s article “The sociology of leopard man” he says “Society tends to discourage people from expressing their unique ideas and behaving in ways that are different from their peers. “ I agree with that author and his statement that people do treat other people different if they act or appear different. In Logan Fey’s article, he argues that people with tattoos, piercings or extraordinary hair does all the things to them for attention.
La’Toyrious Granville Mrs. Sharon Cargill English 12 20 February 2013 Racial Profiling Racial Profiling is mentally segregating and it disunites the U.S.A because it permits negative aspects to every race. In the U.S. it is acceptable to embrace foundations and establishments like BET, Black Entertainment Television, and/or The Chinese District, For example, but what if these titles were revised to WET, White Entertainment Television or The Iraqi District? Would these organizations be appropriate or racially disgraceful? From any standpoint it is mental segregation. Programs like the previously listed instills the negative trait of racial profiling into child before he or she has any idea of what racial profiling is, it programs them to judge and make race a chief factor when it should not be (Psycho 1).
Diversity Diversity has an impact on all our lives and always will. The United States is said to be a big melting pot, to me this quality makes us the most diverse country there is. It is important to understand the word diversity and to know the impact it has on the world. Global awareness is important too because something going on half way around the world could very well impact you. According to Collins English Dictionary diversity is the state or quality of being different or varied.
One of the central beliefs of transcendentalism is that one must be an individual. One must separate themselves from meaningless things such as materialism, wealth, and technology. Ironically enough, those are the things that influence how one is viewed in our society. In our world, media is everywhere; it consumes us and we rarely ever can find a true escape from all of it. From magazines, the constantly blaring television, to the phones in our pocket, media plays a bigger role in our lives than ever before.
SST Task 2 How does the mass media influence the perceptions of gender? This is valuable to society because a person is either a man or a woman. Within that gender lies specific roles to each person. While most people know what their individual role is regarding their gender, the mass media influences what our perception of gender is. Gender roles have played an important part in society, and today, gender and gender roles are something that is constantly changing and what people perceive those roles to be.
