ADVICE TO PREPARE BEFORE SURGERY NHS RECOMMENDATIONS * Stop smoking; try to9 stop smoking as long as possible before the planned surgery. * Lose any excess weight, gradually over time sensible eating, don’t try to crash diet or leave it until the last minute. * Limit your alcohol consumption. * Make sure that any coexisting conditions are well under control. * Keep fit and active by exercising regularly, at least 3 times a week. * Speak to others that have been through the surgery. RLE (REAL LIFE EXPERIENCES) The real life experience is known as the real life test, this is the first hurdle that most transgender Face in order to gain access to treatment such as hormone therapy and gender reassignment surgery. The RLE is a process where individuals live full-time in their preferred gender role for a specified period of time. In the UK most National health Services trusts and specialists gender services require a minimum of two years. The aim of the RLE is to allow a longer period of decision-making in order to try to reduce the number of people with post-operative regret. It allows a longer period of adjustment in terms of functioning at work, education and in social situations. During this time there is an opportunity to formally change legal documents like changing your name and birth certificate. SURGERY * Try to visit the hospital before surgery. Ask to meet with the nursing team so when the time comes for the operation you will be familiar with the ward and nursing staff which will reduce the stress of the experience. * Discuss any concerns with the anaesthetist and the surgeon well in advance, ask questions and don’t be afraid to express any worries or concerns you have. * Prepare your home for your return post-surgery.
