Depiction of Romance in Pre- Islamic Poetry Name: Institution: Date: Introduction While many societies were grappling with ways of expressing different emotions and feelings using similar actions, pre –Islamic society already had their unique way- poetry. Poetry is one of the literal works utilized by the pre Islamic populace in expressing different emotions and mental feelings including rage, sympathy, love, emotions, but above all purpose (Fordharm University, 1998). Although most of this literal works were not recorded especially during ignorant age, the oral tradition of doing poetry was perpetuated within their generations through recitations. These were later recorded by the Islamic scholars. Pre- Islamic poetry Regarded as the earliest type of Arabic literature, pre Islamic poetry can be dated back to 6th century and remains the most celebrated piece of Arabic literature, with oral poetry existing even earlier (Forharm University, 1998). The pre Islamic pagan Arabs were known for their characteristic proud and boastful nature, mostly using eloquent expressions, heart throbbing poetry, and classic tales. Apart from the artistic value and eloquence, pre-Islamic poetry served as a source of classical Arabic language, based on its vocabulary and grammar power. This paper will focus on the aspect of romance and how it was expressed in this historical fine piece of literature. The eloquence and heart throbbing expression prowess of this pre Islamic poets, made it so fascinating and emotional to be in love. It was characterized by free flowing rhymes and rhythms. They made it so real and clear that any man alive would crave for the same. Although poetry in general varied in genre, pre Islamic society due to their boastful nature and prestige, narrowed down the poems into seven major pieces of art work called Mo’ allakat.
