who hides and what is hidden? how does deceit function in the world of the play, and how does it help the play comment on life in general? a central motif in the play is trickery or deceit, whether for good or evil purposes. counterfeiting, or concealing one's true feelings, is part of this motif. everyone seems to lie; good characters as well as evil ones engage in deceit as they attempt to conceal their feelings: beatrice and benedick mask their feelings for one another with bitter insults; don john spies on claudio and hero; don pedro and his 'crew' deceive benedick and beatrice.
“Macbeth’s fall from power was inevitable” Discuss. Macbeth, written by William Shakespeare, is sad tale of Macbeth, a righteous man, corrupted by power and greed. “With great power comes great responsibility”, a quote that has been repeated over the ages and said to every person who is in power. Shakespeare in his play reveals to us a message about power, its implications and consequences on human beings. It is in human nature that the more power one desires the more corrupt one’s actions must become to achieve it.
Shakespeare presents villains in a way that entices the audience through his way or words and techniques used. He makes us wonder who the actual villain is in this story and plays with emotions such as guilt, sympathy and paranoia. I will be analysing Shakespeare's use of language, how he shows the change of character in Macbeth through his choice of words, and what the true meaning of a villain actually is by comparing Shakespeare's work and use of literature with three other well known poems. Throughout the story line of Macbeth, Shakespeare has shown a stark contrast between Macbeths' original personality to the one that he had finally developed. Starting from a victorious, respectable, glorified hero who was a ruthless killing machine, Macbeth then turns into a paranoid, merciless and unstable character which Shakespeare is able to shape, due to the various factors that would change Macbeth.

Set in 1604/5 ancient Britain, Shakespeare’s ‘King Lear’ explores a number of key themes. One character in particular would be subject to much scrutiny in terms of his characters personality traits. Edmund, can be seen as a personification of evil as he is presented as a Machiavellian, who will do what ever it takes by whatever means necessary in order to get what he wants. Ultimately, he turns against his brother Edgar and father Gloucester because of his ‘“illegitimacy” and conspires to turn his father against Edgar by falsifying a letter and planting ideas to remove his father from his powerful position. Driven by the need for power and status, Edmund sides with other evil characters such as Goneril and Regan who have the same motives as him.
In the play the reader can figure out that Macbeth thought a lot of himself. Macbeth was a brave man who thought of himself and others but mostly of himself. The most dominant force of Macbeth’s downfall was the flaws in his own character. Macbeth’s character in the play was very stubborn. This play goes to show the flaws and attributes of Macbeth’s character.
You tallow face!” In this quote the consequences of Juliet defining her father’s authority is seen through the way that Capulet’s attitude changes, from treating her with respect to treating her like scum the minute she disobeys her father’s authority. Imagery is employed to emphasise Capulet’s harshness and the manner in which his attitude changes after Juliet purports to disobey him. Disobeying authority in the context of the law mostly has very serious consequences. An example of this is Act 3 scene 1 in which Romeo kills Tybalt in order to avenge Mercutios death. Although Romeos thirst for revenge was satisfied the consequences were dire.
Fear is an emotion deeply rooted within the human conscience. Based on the circumstances it can cause others to act unjustly. The tragic hero, or deterioration of a character is a common theme throughout literature. In Macbeth, this is no acception, as fear consumes Macbeth and influences his immoral actions. Clearly Macbeth is a play around fear as oppose to ambition since Macbeth’s actions are driven by his fear of rejection of his wife, loss of power, and betrayal.
Joe Vitale Mrs. Reganato English III – Academic 9 April 2014 Effects of Guilt Guilt, by definition, is an emotion that occurs when a person believes that they have violated a moral standard. It is the single driving force that can push someone off the edge thus into a spiraling downfall of tragedies. Through numerous centuries of literature, guilt has been one of the key themes repeatedly stressed. In this way, the morals of mankind are accentuated, explored and disturbed. In The Tragedy of Macbeth, guilt plays an immense role in the lives of Macbeth and his Queen; guilt is the single attribute that pushes them to the edge and tests their sanity.
That the Shakespearean hero suffers because he confronts an internal struggle that is why he is divided within him. The question whether the hostile force against the hero remains undivided or not raises another question: whether there is also a divided soul in some of these adversaries. The dramatic value of a play lies in exhibiting a strong joint front of the hostile forces against the protagonist. They unite themselves purposefully to inflict a crushing on the hero. With this mission they appear to be undivided among themselves.
