The Five Bases of Power in Organizations In any organization, people in leadership are needed to drive members of the group toward the attainment of goals. A leader’s ability is often measured by his or her ability to motivate, influence and guide subordinates to those goals effectively. If the leader has power in an organization, he will be able to influence and guide members of the group, thus leading them to attain the goals set by the organization. This is a very important element of leadership- if a leader does not have power, his employees will not be motivated to follow. However, not all power is defined equally. Some leaders have power for what they can give to the organization; others have power due to what they can take away from their subordinates. To complicate the power structure even more, often times it is not only the leaders who hold power in an organization, but the subordinates themselves. In the given scenario, “Corporation A” has a group of employees at various levels of the leadership structure who are exerting one of the five bases of power, and those powers are creating dependencies among various members of the organization. In the scenario, “Employee 1” is defined as a long-time employee who is encouraged by her marketing manager to put in extra hours of work, to increase the possibility of receiving a superior rating on yearly reviews, and subsequently, a yearly bonus. It is evident that the employee’s desire for the reward of a vacation will be unmet without obtaining that rating on her review. The manager’s reminders that doing extra work has some connection to obtaining the yearly bonus are a way of exercising Reward Power. Reward Power is defined as when an agent of power controls resources and rewards that may be desired by the target (Yukl, 2002).
