English 25January 2012 Mitt Romney’s Poverty Plan for America In the article from The Washington Post, written by Ruth Marcus, she argues the comments and statements made by Mitt Romney. His statement was “I’m concerned about the poor in his country; we have to make sure the safety net is strong and able to help those who can’t help themselves.” The writer Marcus perked up these words, because they were something of a departure from his usual stump speech and because they happened to come on a day when she had written about the dire implications of Romney’s proposals for the social safety net. I have to agree with this comment, only because it has been witnessed on a constant basis of fraud within the systems programs. But when Wallace asked “don’t you think, if you cut 700 billion in aid to the states, that some people are going to get hurt?” Romney stated “ by cutting welfare spending dramatically, I don’t think we hurt the poor. In the same way, I think cutting Medicaid spending by having it go to the states, run more efficiently with less fraud; I don’t think will hurt the people that depend on that program for their health care. There are many posters posted up of many participants convicted of welfare fraud; which included medical, food stamps, housing, childcare and aid. The sad part of this, is that the system has its flaws as well. However, it can be fixed and properly handled with the right training and staff assigned to the job. It is a serious topic and it is a costly expense that could be reduced, but not the way Romney is stating. Just let’s say it could be done with the right people, support and supervision.
