The main argument of this article is to expose child welfare in Sierra Leone and other areas in Africa. The topics that this article covers are child labor, child slavery, and young murderers. This article is mainly to expose why children are leaving their families to achieve a temporary desire; money. This article is a reliable source because it was published by the CQ Global Researcher. Compared to the other articles in my annotated bibliography I would say this is one of the most important articles because I need most of the information posted on the website.
Curtis Keim is a professor of African history, politics and culture at Moravian College in Bethleham, Pennsylvania. He has lived and traveled to Africa many times over the last thirty years. Mistaking Africa: Curiosities and inventions of the American Mind takes readers inside the history behind the inaccurate and stereotypical words and ideas about Africa. The author also offers alternative ways to get around these stereotypes and see the real Africa. The book focuses on white American myths because Keim feels they are the most dominant, negative, and in need of change.
External factors are factors outside the education system, e.g. influence of home and family background and wider society. Some sociologists would argue that it is the factors outside the school that are the main cause of differences in the educational achievement of different social groups. One theory for this is material depravation. Material depravation is the lack of money and resources in the home.
Simmel was interested in revealing the universal characteristics present in all social relationships, whether in an office, a family or a bus queue. Similarly historical studies of the social structure of the Roman Empire may have little relevance to today’s social problems. On the other hand, may sociologists are interested in solving social problems through their research. For example, sociologists who feel strongly about poverty or about inequalities in educational achievement have conducted research aimed at discovering solutions to the social problems. Many are employed directly by the government departments such as the Home Office or the Department for Children,
In social science poverty is defined in two ways; absolute poverty concept based on lack of fulfilment of basic human needs such as food shelter, clothing and other things redeemed essential Giddens(2006, p342); and relative poverty describes inequality or a gap in people’s incomes and accepted standard of living. Peter Townsend(1979) defined poverty as individuals, families, and groups which lack resources to obtain the types of diet, participation in activities , living conditions and amenities which are customary, or at least commonly encouraged or approved in the societies to which they belong (Blackburn,1991 p9). Social developments centring on the structural origins of poverty date back to the revolutionary study of Webbs in the Minority Report on Poor Law 1909.The era of anti-poverty policies have since then exterminated destitution in the British society, regardless persistence periods of economic growth and established welfare state, poverty, deficiency and high levels of income inequality still exist (Coats, Johnson &Hackett (2012, p9). Assessments of anti-poverty policies have been deemed to be controversial and argumentative regarding the definition and the measurement of poverty, and the general public misunderstandings about the causes of poverty. Some of today’s politicians say the “deserving and undeserving” poor is significant to the Victorian era hence this undermines the effort
On account of the works of authors such as Equiano, that through their personal experiences, were able to bring to light exactly how inhumane it was for Africans during this era. It took a unique and discreet method of writing that appealed to his audience (who were prominently white) what really happened to Africans who were taken from their families and homes. Equiano was an abolitionist just as much as he was a writer. His work was not meant to portray himself as a victim, but as someone who was put in his position to speak out against slavery in an intellectual way. He led the way for other authors who through their works brought change to this
Growing up in a town that is heavily populated with low income families, I felt like I had seen most of the struggles first hand not knowing all the issues behind and kept inside the homes of each family. I feel like it is a major issue in America and not enough is being done to help stop it. Food availability is something that goes at the top of the chain. If food is not available then hunger sets in, which results in not getting adequate nutrition. Even though that is a simple chain it causes a tremendous amount of health issues for many
Knowing that there is no money to get by with at least the essentials in life, could lead to people doing things they feel they can control. Socioeconomic thoughts by people in poverty are well-known factors of African-American drug use. Many experts on substance abuse disorders agree that poverty and other socioeconomic factors have a great influence on the frequency of substance abuse in the African-American community. A 1992 study identified poverty, illiteracy, limited job opportunities, poor education, high availability of drugs, and stresses of the urban lifestyle as underpinnings of substance abuse in the black community
India wasn’t the only country that Britain negatively affected. The British also negatively affected Africa, the country that they also helped. The British conquered land from the Africans. According to Document 4, the British were fascinated with the gold in Africa. This was positive for the British, because they achieved raw materials to trade, but it was negative for the Africans, because they were forced to work.
Europeans started viewing the African slaves as not human at all instead, they saw them as livestock. When the Africans got fed up and tried to rebel the Europeans beat them, broke their limbs, and sometimes killed them as a means of discipline. It is still a huge mystery as to how the colonists were mentally capable of causing so much torture and pain to other human
