The relationship of Poverty and Obesity In America obesity has been on the rise and has become a national concern. America’s obesity is by far caused by the consumption of energy dense, nutritionally empty and high caloric food and snacks. There is a strong coloration between poverty and obesity. Obesity has been linked with social status. Does being obese make you poor? or being poor make you obese? There seem to be a direct link between socio economic status and obesity. The poor tend to be more obese than their counter parts. Being poor is a risk factor for being overweight. Is this because low income families chose to consume more high caloric items due to cost or is it lack of choice? Low income families are faced with a number of constricts when it comes to their choice of food items. The lack of money can cause the family to make a poor choice of food consumption. Single parent family households are highly affected by poverty. Time constrict, when a single parent is trying to make ends meet, can contribute to making the easier choice of going to a fast food restaurant than cooking at home The poor may not pay much emphasis on what is in the food. Rather, the money saved by going to the local fast food store is what is most important. High caloric soda drinks and Kool-Aid are preferred over water and fruit juices due to cost. Fast food restaurants seem to drop their prices on regular bases to attract more customers. The value meals and one dollar hamburgers are tempting choices for the person on a very limited and restricted income. A healthy diet that includes fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins are not attainable and affordable. Most low income families prioritize what needs to be taken care of first and it seems that food tend to fall towards the bottom of the list.
