Multitudes of electronic books are available online, which limits the need to have copies and insets from full books. By all means, internet has been a blessing, however, in the same way a knife to the way we’re thinking. Therefore, internet has elevated our stupidity and made all of our lives easier for the worst. Ten or more years ago, students would go to the library for research and search through books and read to find out what they needed. It would take them hours to finish their research. But now in today’s civilization just by a click of a button you have what you need.
A Changing World One of the main assertions of The Shallows: What the Internet is doing to our Brains, by Nicholas Carr, is that the Internet is changing the way that people are reading. Carr describes how he used to read before he started spending a lot of time on the Internet. He used to be able to read in great depth and get lost in the pages of a book. Now, Carr says after using the Net for quite some time, he is hardly able to read more than a few pages without getting distracted or bored. As Carr proves throughout his book, the brain is able to be altered and changed.
Even though these devices come with many ways to read, most people do not use this to their advantage. People mainly focus on applications, such as games, that come with these devices. The change from reading a book to playing a game on a digital device can drastically affect a person’s intellectual ability and attention span. Not knowing the effect that all of this technology will have on them, people will gradually become less educated. All of this explains another thing that the book
Rachel Reine English 101 Section 4 February 19, 2012 Internet Use in Teenagers In response to the new generation’s use of internet and lack of reading classic books, Amy Goldwasser defends the teenage reputation in her article “What’s the Matter with Kids Today?” Goldwasser speaks of how the internet has expanded kids’ minds when it comes to school and themselves, also how this generation has more access than older generations due to the internet. Goldwasser claims that teenagers spending time online is overall good for them because they do read and write. The content, however, is not strong enough for educational purposes. A blog post about how to curl hair or how to pass the perfect spiral is not giving them any educational value. Whereas reading the local newspaper or reading a classic novel like “The Great Gatsby” by F Scott Fitzgerald would provide a more intellectual purpose.
Most people find reading books easier so don’t some people like me because I prefer researching on the internet to searching for stuff in the library. Some people will support Carr by saying that the internet really makes us dumber but I’m on the opposite side because I defiantly think it makes as smarter especially with this technology that keeps improving as years come. All these things we have today and are able to access to will not be available without the internet because people or researchers wouldn’t have been able to get accurate information about what they were looking
Students sometimes become so dependent upon technology that they are not exposed to the traditional ways of learning. Because some students might rely on technology in every area of learning, they might never experience what it is like to visit a library or read a printed textbook, especially since so many books can be purchased on audio now. Other disadvantages are that students’ handwriting skills might suffer due to a lack of practice because of their use of the computer to always write reports and essays. Always relying on the computer to find and correct errors while creating documents can result in students having very poor progress in grammar and spelling skills. Because many students also rely on the computer’s calculator, their ability to learn the proper methods of solving math problems might not be as enhanced.
We do not call this behavior challenging because it summons you to a duel or battle but because it is threatening, provocative, and stimulating, all at the same time. And the last website that I went to was csefel.vanderbilt.edu/resources/family.htm. This website was more for the families to read and get more of a understand and it gave some resources. If I was to have a challenging child in my class then I would was to involve the parents or caregivers and let them be on the same page as I am.
