Popularity in Crime and Justice Related Entertainment Why is it that crime and justice related media is so popular these days? Why do people enjoy the crime aspect of a TV show so much? Most would say it’s another form of entertainment, but it goes far beyond that. The mystery itself keeps people on their toes. The way these shows and books appeal to people’s emotions with tragic stories and suspense keeps the viewers and readers wanting more. People thrive off the drama and because it’s about crime and justice, which holds real life importance, they assume it’s as close to reality as it gets. The topics these shows and books represent are almost identical to the events we hear about in our everyday life. This makes these shows relatable. As far as my own interest in these types of shows, I do watch Criminal Minds. The show itself, if you’re not familiar with it, is a group of 7 on the hunt to track down serial killers by thinking like a criminal and getting into their minds; they are profilers. Personally, I find this fascinating because I’ve always found myself wanting to be some sort of a profiler. I’m pretty good at analyzing behavior, and it’s always been a specialty of mine to “get to the bottom of things”. This show isn’t just entertaining, it’s intriguing. It shows the process behind tracking the criminal down. Although this show isn’t spot-on to the real crime and justice system either, I do believe it’s as close as it gets when compared to the other shows on TV these days. Most of the shows that air involve a group of people doing ‘the dirty work’ and one star of the show that always seems to find out the truth. Whether it be intuition or pure genius like quality’s, the star is always the hero. When it comes to Criminal Minds, it shows the characters getting into the mindset of the criminal.
