Poor Effects of Homework

Homework. An 8 letter word that most students repel and dread when they hear their teachers say it. Homework has historically been given to students to reinforce what they learn at school, and ultimately to help them learn the material better. However, too much homework is not helpful, and can be counterproductive. Excessive amounts of time spent on completing homework can take away from a kid’s social life, family time, and limits participation in sports or other activities. The amount of homework a teacher can give to a student should be restricted, and only assigned due to necessity. I believe that excessive amounts of homework can be harmful to kids both physically and mentally. Teachers should take that into consideration and hopefully eliminate or decrease the amount of homework assigned. First, I believe homework can be harmful to kids mentally. I’m sure we’ve all come across the situation where we especially have a lot of homework one day and we feel overwhelmed and stressed out. After this occurring many times, it cannot be good for our mental health. You stress at school trying to learn the course material, then you stress way more at home trying to remember and apply what you learned at school. With homework leading to stress, it may cause Inability to concentrate, Irritability or frequent anger, Panic attacks, and more. If students are constantly going through this, it could lead to serious problems. Second, I also believe that homework can affect students physically. Look at it this way: You spend more than 6 hours sitting in a desk 5 days a week, then you come home and have more than 1 hour of homework per class. Your muscles soften and your blood doesn’t circulate as well which studies have shown that lead you more prone to heart disease.
