Corporations make us fat Many people claim that it is personal responsibility of what you eat, however fast food corporations and their marketing strategies make it almost impossible to say no. From childhood we are conditioned to grab a large combo meal on our way home instead of going to the grocery store then cooking it ourselves. The ease, convenience, and the cheap prices make it all too easy for consumers. Corporations are to blame for America’s obesity problems because of their lack of nutritional information available to consumers, their lack of alternatives, and their brand recognition and advertisements addicting us from childhood. There is no calorie information posted in any fast food restaurant.
("Store Wars," n.d., Big store, business practices section, para. 1).The low prices may be great for the economy, but that's about all walmart is doing for America. For people who work at Walmart, in order to make ends meet, they usually have to work at two different jobs. Their significant other usually has to work, too. Not enough money and too much stress lowers the quality of life that people have, and their standards of living also drop, as they are forced to get by with cheap, low-quality items (Nickels, McHugh & McHugh, 2010).
The Fast Food Industry is responsible for obesity in America as they have many fast food restaurants typically many within a small radius providing cheap easy solutions to societies hunger. David Zinczenko, a writer for The New York Times, describes marketing powers in his assessment "Don't Blame the Eater" he states that just about all fast food restaurants falsely advertise their foods and pass to many as a "healthy" meal choice but little do people know is that they are still extremely unhealthy foods that should not be included in anybody's diet what so ever. There has been many varieties of marketing techniques developed over the years of the fast food industry's attempts to persuade others to eat at their establishments. The fact that the foods they are extremely unhealthy for people of all ages from kids to adults is helping to cause obesity throughout America although some may be aware of the risks the average American still continues to eat out at fast food establishments along with the family giving the fast food industry a chance to get the entire family hooked for life. Going to fast food restaurants to prove his theory about how horrible fast food restaurants are for the human body.
He brings up a lot of arguments and points in his book and one he uses is Logos to better his points. One specifically he uses is his point on how the fast food industry is the largest group by far that employs low wage workers. He says no skill required and I really like this “The annual turnover rate in the fast food industry is about 300 to 400 percent. The typical fast food worker quits or is fired every 3 to 4 months” (90). Schlosser betters his argument with the use of strong facts and gives the points strength.
Fast food restaurants dont force the clients to buy and eat there. There are comments that people make and say that fast food restaurants should carry warning labels like the ones for tobacco and alcohol. I disagree, people should know what's right or wrong, good or bad, healthy or unhealthy. It is their responsibility, just like Mitch Jordan from Sacramento, California said, "Eat a lot, do nothing, and get fat. Eat a lot, exercise a lot, and stay healthy.
While some argued that it is the fault of food industries, and for some, fault of consumers, it can easily be resolved with two words: self-responsibility. Therefore, consumers are definitely the ones responsible for the current epidemic in this country. The first reason why consumers are responsible for America’s obesity epidemic is because consumers are the ones that choose what to eat and feed their children. There are many alternatives to fast food but most people rather not take their time to prepare for a healthier meal. In “The Battle against Fast Food Begins in Home”, author Daniel Weibtraub tries to convince parents to take a stand and fend off obesity in their homes.
Workers become losers in this process because the producers have to sell their products close to dirt cheap which causes them to work more for cheaper. Such as how the jeans being sold were being sold at $4.10 a pair which is multiple times more in retail. Neoliberalism has been a factory primarily in China and also India who have had suffering economies until recent years. Neoliberalism benefits owners who receive all the benefits of the production. Such as Mr. Lam who was chief of Police then opened a denim factory and has been doing quite well.
Remember you have to eat and unless you’re on a meal plan (which is still basically paying) you will have to go out and buy your own things to eat there is no mommy or daddy there anymore to help make sure your mouth is fed so you’ll have to try to save as much as you can to provide for yourself. Enough with all the food talk what about your books the most important thing in college is for you to expand your knowledge and without books it will be hard for you to gain that knowledge. I researched a few college textbooks and the prices look like a monthly car payment. The cheapest book I’ve seen was about $150 now imagine you have 5 classes you do the math that’s $750 dollars. Now imagine all your professors want you to have the textbooks immediately but you have no way to pay for the books because you spent your money on items you didn’t need or eating out when you didn’t need to.
One of the main things that employers will have to do in order to make money will be to reduce hours, limit job creation, and increase prices. Many believe the minimum wage jobs are not meant to be a career, they are transitional jobs. Therefore minimum wage employees should receive transitional pay. A vast majority of the employees who attain minimum wage jobs have families that are on welfare, so they may receive Link, W.I.C., and Section 8 living therefore their needs are taken care of if they live within their means. Major corporations like McDonald’s and Walmart will barely be affected by the increase but the small businesses will be a thing of the past and slowly but surely fade away.
First of all, fast food restaurants are popular because they are convenient for our active in modern day lives. Many people are constantly busy with their daily life, they do not have time to prepare good food; so fast food restaurants are the great conveniences for everyone at any time. Besides, fast food restaurants are at every corner of a street. This is an important point to many people, because when they get hungry, they do not have to waste a lot of time searching for a restaurant to eat from. They just find the fast food restaurant nears the place they are in.
