Policy Analysis I P. Price CJA/464 24, September 2012 Jim McDermott Policy Analysis I There are times when you are alone at home and, you feel uneasy. As you inspect the house you find someone in your house going through your things. Suddenly the intruder turns and sees’ you. This is an everyday occurrence throughout America. What are we as free public allowed and capable to do? There are many arguments throughout the country referring to the public owning personal protection in the form of a firearm. Though the dangers of weapons are apparent, we as free Americans have the constitutional right to possess a firearm. Local agencies have been involved in the gun control issue for many years. When interviews were conducted of local law enforcement and other prospective agencies; the majority feel that crime would drop substantially if more people owned and could properly use a firearm. A small percentage did agree with the current political views, that the problem in this country is that guns are to easily assessable to the general public. Many of the officers interviewed are retired sheriff’s department in Texas and Colorado, in these agencies the consensus is that stricter gun laws will not detour violent or aggravated crime. The application of stricter gun control laws will in fact hinder law enforcement agencies across America. During the Brady Band law enforcement agencies, although approved, had complications getting what is considered to be an assault rifle for official duties. Many law enforcement agencies had to settle for a less superior weapon than the combatant they faced. This event is a far too common on street patrol across America. When our trust is put into someone else’s hands do you want these everyday hero’s to be out gunned by superior weaponry. Law enforcement officers are who the people believe in to keep them safe; however the officers do rely on the help of the general public from time to time. Many will argue that it is a person’s constitutional right under the second amendment, the right to bear arms. Many will argue this amendment is no longer needed and others will base an entire argument on this amendment alone. The need for citizen to own and possess firearms should be a preference of the city or county of residence.
