QUESTION: Discuss the development of Policing in the Pacific? And how has these developments changed or shaped the policing of your respective island states today? You need to identify at least four challenges. According to the Wikipedia it defines Policing as to regulate, control, or keep in order with or as if with a law enforcement agency, while it defined development as a significant event, occurrence, or change. This essay will discuss policing development in the pacific religion, by comparing different type of policing such as in the pre-European, post and Colonial era, and in today’s policing known as the modern Policing. It will also give four challenges related to this development that mostly affect the police organization and the people. However examples will be related to policing in Kiribati and some other pacific islanders. Policing during pre-European contact, colonial and post colonial era. Firstly, during the pre- European contact pacific islanders are once known as the happy people and live with harmony as their Life was regulated by socially accepted customs, norms and traditions (Newton: 1998). It witness that from their own experience most people have half doors, no locks, and sometimes they can eat and sleep in their relatives homes in times of visiting. Anybody in this period has never minded such behaviors, as there is no budget in those days, food were easy to get since you do not have to buy them (Dinnen: 2003). The society policed itself as there are no formal laws, courts, prisons and police (Newton: 1998). But things have change in the colonial era such as Geographically defined EEZ, the introduction of the new system of Government, Executive, Legislative and Judicial Public service Law and Justice Sector, where police are come about to enforce the law, court for hearing the case and the prison for correctional
