CJ Careers-Police Sniper The three CJ Careers that I looked at were Criminal Analyst, K-9 Handler and Police Sniper. The career I chose to write about is the Police Sniper. Snipers are by definition expert marksmen, but this is where the conception of expert marksmen can be construed. A lot of people have the misconception that to be a good sniper, you have to be a good shooter. Shooting is only 20 percent of the course, It takes a patient person, a disciplined person, a person who is used to working alone. Snipers have special abilities, training, and equipment that allow them to do jobs that deliver highly accurate rifle fire against enemy targets which can't be attacked by regular riflemen due to variables such as visibility, range, the opportunity, size, or location. Statistics compiled from the Vietnam conflict estimate that the average number of rounds used per kill by United States Army Soldiers were 200,000 however the average number of rounds used per kill by United States Army snipers in Vietnam was only 1.3 (Plaster). From the days of Leonardo da Vinci to Gunny Sergeant Carlos Hathcock II days in the Vietnam conflict, the development and use of snipers in combat has significantly contributed to successful warfare. A police sniper is usually a member of SWAT teams. A sniper must be familiar with duties of a police officer and SWAT team member. Police snipers are usually used when there is an elevated degree of danger to life or property. A police sniper must meet all the physical and mental requirements for both regular and police work and SWAT team work. As a sniper, you must be “physically fit, have excellent marksmanship skills, be able to endure long periods of time in a prone position, and make quick decisions” (Exploring Criminal Justice CD-Rom).
