Police Roles and Functions In my paper I will be talking about the different functions of the police agencies; at the local, state, and federal levels. I will be comparing the functions which they perform and explain how they perform the different tasks between the local, state, and federal levels. I will also be discussing what would happen if the various functions and roles of policing agencies were to be limited in a community. The functions of police can vary based on the agency they are posted in. The reason they vary between the local, state, and federal divisions; are some of these functions are service, protect, and uphold the laws. At each and every level of law enforcements agencies have a set of specific rules, responsibilities, and procedures in which they have to follow no matter what kind of a situation they are placed in. The functions which they perform are also based on the jurisdiction which each agency is given by the lead commander of each level. Local police have the lease amount of jurisdiction, the state police haven slightly more jurisdictions then the local police, and then the federal police have the most jurisdictions out of all three of the police agencies. The local police functions are they are to serve and protect the local citizens; police provide public services; control and perform the local and state laws; traffic enforcement and perform criminal investigations. Local law enforcement are also responsible for responding to local citizen’s calls for services, community patrol, emergency services, record keeping, and provide public information to the citizens that they request. They often work local events such as fairs, concerts, and charity events; local police maintain order and laws. Local police agencies also work with child protective services to help assist in the removal of children form improper homes.
