Police Powers Stop and question It’s one of the basic powers that police have. They can stop you at any time and ask you what you are doing here and why you are in this area or where you are going to. However you don’t have to answer any of those questions. Stop and search This is one of the most important powers of the police force and those include stopping persons and vehicles if they have reasonable grounds to suspect that you are carrying for example illegal drugs, a weapon or something that could be used in committing a crime. You can also be searched without ‘reasonable grounds’ if it has been approved by a senior officer and this can happen if you’re suspected of being in a specific location or area and if you’re carrying a weapon or have used one. There are also requirements for a police officer before searching you. He/she must tell you their name and police station they are assigned to, what they are expecting to find on you and the reason why they want to search you, why they are allowed to search you and that you can have a record of the search. The police can search you in any place that is generally open to the public. This means they can search you anywhere other than your home and your garden, or the home or garden of someone who has given you permission to be there. If you are somewhere without the permission of the homeowner or somewhere where you shouldn’t be you can be searched. Also the police have the right to use reasonable force when they stop and search however it must be used as last resort. Without this power police could be even powerless as people could be even carrying weapons with them therefore society could feel unsafe. Removing clothing A police officer can ask you to take off your coat, jacket or gloves. The police might ask you to take off other clothes and anything you’re wearing for religious reasons - e.g. a
