In the United States, all agencies of law enforcement are connected to one another because most of these agencies have various levels of government and jurisdictions that overlap. Generally, the different department levels work and cooperate as one to offer protection to citizens and for prevention and solving of crimes.
The local law enforcers are mandated with the power for serving and protecting the public and maintaining peace in the neighborhood. A majority of local rule enforcement agencies are small, and they employ many civilians for finger printing, data processing and clerical responsibilities. Local law enforcement agencies patrol a given jurisdiction, and then apprehend and detain juvenile together with adult criminal suspects. These agencies also offer community service and relations, emergency services, traffic law enforcement, and criminal and forensic investigations.
A majority of local law enforcement agencies carry out a typical set tasks and functions and offer the same services to the community. These services comprise of accident investigations, narcotics and vice control, and traffic law enforcement, peace keeping, patrol, radio communication, crime prevention, and search and rescue. Other functions include property and violent crime investigations, death investigations, and finger printing processing.
A majority of local law enforcement agencies has been getting involved with schools and the community citizens. Most of the schools have on campus for assisting students together with teachers. Local programs have initiated programs like D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) that help in educating children and parents concerning the signs of drug abuse, the dangers of drug use and issues of domestic violence (Wycoff and Kelling, 2002).
