There are pedophiles who are motivated by their sexual attraction to children, rapists who commit sexual assaults and rapes can sometimes be initiated by one or more persons against a single victim, child molesters who are not always pedophiles, etc. Most states require convicted sex offenders to participate in treatment while in prison and upon release. According to the Safer Society Survey done in 2003 there are 1,549 sex offender treatment programs in the U.S. (Mcgrath, 2003). The biggest component of sex offender treatment is to know there is no “one-size-fits-all” treatment for sex offenders. Throughout history, serial killers have been recorded, starting in the dark ages, but now there’s a new type of serial killer that engages in some of the offences we consider taboo. Taboo includes things such as incest, necrophilia, cannibalism and other offences that are considered morally wrong. Serial killers, such as Jeffery Dahmer, take pleasure in mutilating their victims, performing sexual acts post-mortem and ingesting organs and bodily fluids. This can be a mark of sexual frustration as a child or a desire for power and is to be feared by their victims. Sex is the root cause in 69 percent of all cases; some serial killers have said that they get pleasure from the pain and suffering of their victims.

A few common unreported crimes that deal with negative sexual related criminal behavior toward another individual are visible. These are known as rape as well as sexual assault. The reasons many may feel hesitant to report crimes include fear of the accused criminal such as retaliation, shame or embarrassment of society’s judgment as well as the law enforcement not believing his or her statements. Other reasons may include courtroom participation as well as the thought of the crime being too petty to report. Although the act of negative criminal behavior from one individual to another such as rape and sexual assault is indeed underreported, there are also other crimes unreported.
Despite what the myth of stranger rape dictates, initiators of sexual assault are often personally connected to victims. Many myths specifically surround male-perpetrated sexual assault against women. Such statements include that women often lie about sexual assault and that women's choices of clothing, ways of walking, and habitats are reasons for their assault. There are also several myths about males' experiences of female committed sexual assault. It is often assumed that the offenders of sexual aggression against males are male, which is not always the case.

Sexual offenders, individuals often labeled as “evil”, are well aware of public images of themselves and their crimes. This article examines public discourses of “evil” as they pertain to sexual offenders and the views of sexual offenders themselves on what this means to them. The ethnographic research was undertaken in a prison unit designed for the treatment of sexual offenders. As a result, the issue of rehabilitation figured centrally in their conceptualization of evil. While admitting to being bad, and perhaps even having committed evil acts, they generally reject the label of “evil” as understood in essentialist terms.
