Dana is terrified because that was the house she was supposed to go to. The white men horribly beat the men for not having papers stating he was free. Dana is disgusted because the beating is so horrifying she has never seen anything like it because she was born in different times. After taking a few hits at the women the men ride off taking the black man with them back towards Rufus’ home. She thinks the man was most likely a slave of Rufus’ farther who had runaway.
He is affected by racism, the great depression, and the laws of that time. As an African American Tom Robinson, life was filled with hardships. For example the constant racism he encountered. In To Kill a Mockingbird Scout overheard Miss Gates saying “Time somebody taught ‘em a lesson, they were gettin’ way above themselves, an’ the next thing they think they can do is marry us” whites didn’t even view blacks as humans at this time. Racism can also be shown in people through science.
Tom Robinson is a black man who is accused of raping Mayella Ewell. In Maycomb County, there is still serious racism going on and Blacks have not been treated right. However, Atticus still decides to take the case and defend Tom Robinson even though he knows that town’s people would insult him and his children. Although Atticus tried his best to prove Tom is innocent and he actually proves it, he still loses the trial. Despite the truth that he lost, Maycomb makes a “baby-step”( p.289).
He explained that white men always win and cheat, so the white men are the victors but the white man is always a bad man. This shows that it can be prejudice because Tom`s story was not heard and he was accused of being guilty and so he was killed. In cases of Tom being wrongly accused, harassment by others, on Scout and Atticus defending the jail can have an opinion of people that is destructive. When the group of men came to kill Tom, it shows that if Scout and Jem did not have a father would be the same thing for Walter Cunningham.
“Good by mr wigin tell them im strong tell them im a man”(234). Jefferson was at the wrong place at the wrong time when two other black men tried to rob a white man’s liquor store. After the death of these men, instead of calling 911 he steals some money out the register and a bottle of wine off shelf. After Jefferson has been sentenced to death by execution, his godmother, Miss Emma, requests that Grant Wiggins teaches him to be a man before he dies instead of allowing him to die as a hog-which is what Jefferson’s defense attorney refers to him as. Although Grant initially doesn’t want to help Jefferson, he gradually changes throughout this book and accomplishes his goal of transforming him into a man.
Mrs. Stinger Boo Radley- The mysterious Arthur Radley is blamed for virtually any unexplainable act in Maycomb. Any stealthy small crimes committed in Maycomb were his work. Because of his past history of apparent mental instability and the forced seclusion within the Radley House that his father strictly enforced, he is accused of everything from being a peeping tom to poisoning pecans. There is no evidence or witnesses to any of these accusations, but rumors persist throughout the town, making Boo a man with no friends or expectations for a better future. The jury- Tom Robinson is accused of rape by a white family, the Ewells, who have been, according to Atticus, "the disgrace of Maycomb for three generations."
He also learns that his grandfather was a dominating, immoral and scheming. David and his parents went face to face with dealing with the consequences of Frank’s crime. Racial prejudice means any action practice or belief that reflects the racial world view the ideology that humans are divided into separate groups because of their skin colour. The American Indians are racially prejudiced by most of the people in Montana, they are going through a hard life and living in a desolate reservation; also their lands are probably the least valuable compare to other regions. David eventually learns of the racial discriminations such as not allowing “an athlete like Ronnie” to attend college.
To Kill A Mockingbird Digging A Little Deeper After having read the novel & seeing the movie, it occurs to me that the story is set in during the days of great depression when racism and prejudice was still around, but more and more people were fighting for equality and rights. The city is Maycomb, Alabama, where trouble is brewing when Atticus Finch takes up the job of lawying for a negro man in court and is then forward criticized and mocked for defending him. People treat each other like crap in this town and the economy is terrible. People don’t have much jobs because the great depression but those who do are farmers. He was convicted of rape, and was testified against by Robert E. Lee Ewell, the town drunk.
On his way to another jail, he was shot by a few white men who hunted him down (Lee, 2006). Because of the bigotry involved in this movie, Tom Robison’s life was hugely affected. If he were a white man, he probably would have never been sent to jail or killed. If only Tom knew that the coming years would bring justice to blacks in the U.S…. The early 1950’s through the late 1960’s began the Civil Rights Movement, the social movements in the United States that were aimed at outlawing racial discrimination against African Americans and restoring voting rights to them.
Everywhere you go, poverty can be found. There are families living on the streets because they can’t afford a house. A few families are starving and cold because they lost everything they own in this economic depression. The reason is because rich people won’t spend a few of their dollars to help our economic situation while the poor put forth everything they had. I believe that it would be in the world’s best interest if state governments would hire thieves to steal from the rich and give to the poor.
