Playing Violent Video Games Affect Aggressive Behaviour in Children and Adolescents

Violent video games have been related to school shooting all around America; to the rising youth crime; to children killing other children events and to a lot more shocking events all around the world. As a result of these events many people have lost their lives. BUT, are violent video games the cause of such devastating events? Do they actually result in aggressive behavior? The question whether violent video games actually affect aggressive behavior has set a conflict between many researches. Aggression as defined in Webster’s Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary (1989) is defined as a hostile, injurious, or destructive behavior caused by frustration. Most researches based on their research support that violent video games do affect aggressive behavior and do have a link with the violent events mentioned above. However, there is research that supports the exact opposite; violent video games show no negative effects on children’s and adolescents’ behavior. Therefore, there are a lot of factors that we should consider before deciding whether violent video games actually drive abnormal behavior. Over 4 decades ago Steinfeld (1972) warned that there is a causal relationship between televised violence and behavior. After that a lot of research has been made on the effect of not only TV violence but violent media in general; hence violent video games. Unlike television which only requires passive attention by the watcher, violent video games require active participation by the player. This participation includes fighting and attacking using all sorts of weapons. If this fighting is successful and the player manages to destroy whatever comes in his way then a reward is given. Bandura and Berkowitz (1977; 1993) support that the result of rewarding violence is the interpretation of such behaviors. As a result, children and adolescents playing such games may result in
