Teenagers of America are obsessed with social networking sites and online gaming. Literally right this second thousands of little kids are becoming obese from little to no physical activity in their daily lives. Parents aren’t helping the matter either, whether it’s because they’re uninformed or they just don’t care about getting their children involved; they aren’t doing their jobs as parents of America. This is not teaching their children to grow up to be incredible leaders of our country. According to source A, “Community Service embodies experiential learning, locating a moral center, community health, because it is about empowerment and making the world a better place…” Yet, each day kids are becoming lazier and lazier because they don’t understand the importance of volunteer work and community service.
This book poses tough questions that should be addressed to ensure that children are protected and correctly guided while using a computer. Dr. Healy expresses concern that too little time has been spent studying the effects of educational technology, which consequently, can cause greater harm than good. Dr. Healy addresses the misconception that computers and educational software is the "key to successful student achievement". After countless hours in classrooms observing and talking to teachers and students, Dr. Healy suggests that perhaps many parents and educators "want to believe that technology is the `magic bullet' that will take care of problems in our education system that previously failed to be addressed" (p. 18). Consequently, she believes too much emphasis is placed on technology, taking away from the development of basic reading, math and problem solving skills.
One problem the internet caused stated in the documentary is, it is very hard for parents and authorities to regulate what kids do on the computer. Since the internet is so easy to access via new technologies, authoritative figures just cannot be present with the kids all the time. Another issue the internet has caused reported by the documentary is by it being so addictive, it has taken time away from studying, school work and activities such as reading. This is a problem because education is almost a must in today’s society. However, the documentary fails to acknowledge how the internet has helped kids by providing ways to find answers and acquire research and knowledge.
Now, more and more children don’t like to listen to the other people. When someone is talking to them, they won’t care what he/she is talking about, and they will continuous to play their game. In many parents’ eyes, they will think their child still younger and like to play. Actually, if parents don’t correct their children’s attitude for listening, that will make their children don’t know how to listen to the other people anymore. Learning to how to listen is a core; it should be a part of children’s education.
I am writing my essay on the idea of having a 12 month school year. I do not believe we should have a 12 month school year. This is because it is not good for the students, not good for the teachers, and not good for the school either. I feel that a 12 month school year is not good for the students. For instance, if students had to do school work all year they will not work as well as they would in a normal school year.
Also, if student’s only studies subjects that interest them then they are being ignorant to the world around them. Overall, students will be challenging themselves and they would not develop practical skills. Graff believes schools should integrate nonacademic interests as objects of academic study, such as street smart, to the traditional education system. He explains that kids who are street smart do not have interest in the traditional education system and therefore, do not do well in their academic studies. Graff uses his own experience as an example, “It was in … my reading of sports books and magazines, that I began to learn the rudiments of the intellectual life: how to make an argument” (201).
As for intellectual development in working class children, working-class homes lack books, educational toys and activities that stimulate educational development. This could be due to the fact that the parents cannot afford it, they don’t have any free time to sit down and help their children with their educational needs or because the parent didn’t receive good grades when they went to school so therefore they are not fussed about their child’s education. This means that these children start school at a disadvantage. Middle-class children would have already been brought up with educational toys and activities and their parents would have probably read to them from a young age. This shows that working-class parents cannot afford to buy expensive toys and books to help their children throughout school as well as the fact that working-class parents can lack confidence if they have had a poor education themselves.
Students do not realize that plagiarizing someone else’s work is actually stealing. The educational system does not teach this to students. The educational system should teach that you have to cite an author even if you just take their idea and do not use their exact words. The online companies that generate essays for students should be outlawed. This is making it where students that have a lot of money can easily get by with actually learning how to write correctly.
Technology is a really over-powering thing and a growing epidemic and I feel that it's really taking a tole on young people but at the same time advancing the communication between us. To know that teens are using their phones on average 60 times a day is quiete saddening because there are so many other things you can be doing, such as doing home work, studying and spending time with family.
Americans let children of the age 7 or less play with a tablet or an iPad instead of taking them to the park to play. That it gets to the point that the children of such young age are asking for the technology to be entertained instead of going outside. Thus putting the blame on the parents since they as well are on their own device taking the easy route for their children. Considering in today’s world parents are able to access any social media at any moment on their smart phone and hear stories of children going missing and all these horrific events going on. Parents worry more and become overly protective over their children.
