Plantar Fasciitis Nursing II- Spring 2010 Kate E Reid Rasmussen College Author Note This research is being submitted on May 17th, 2010 for Jennifer Peterson’s PN 125 course at Rasmussen College by Kate Reid. The musculoskeletal system is probably the most used and abused body system that we have and many people forget how important this system is for physical movement. The musculoskeletal system includes the skeletal system of course, but it also includes the joints, muscles, ligaments, bursae, and tendons; basically everything we need to support our body and function daily. There are many disorders of this system but I will focus on plantar fasciitis. I will discuss what it is, signs and symptoms, risk factors, diagnostic tests, types of treatment, how it will impact your life and interventions that we can do to limit the pain. Plantar fasciitis is a condition in which the tendon on the bottom of the foot called the plantar fascia becomes inflamed. The plantar fascia, aka arch tendon, connects your heal to the base of your toes which helps support the arch of the foot. Inflammation of the tendon can be caused by tension that causes small tears in the fascia. Pain related to plantar fasciitis is located in the heel of the foot affected. Symptoms of plantar fasciitis may appear gradually or suddenly and include: burning pain on the sole of the foot, heel pain when taking the first steps in the morning, tenderness when touching the sole or heel, and pain when standing on tiptoe (Bandash, 2009). Some of the risk factors for developing plantar fasciitis is being a woman, being overweight, having a job that requires lots of standing or walking, having flat feet or very high arches, and certain types of exercise that increase the amount of stress on the heels or if you have tight calf muscles that limit how far you can stretch your ankles (American
