Budget Cuts On Planned Parenthood The clock is ticking for Congress to pass a budget and decide whether to bar all federal funding for Planned Parenthood. The anti-choice members of Congress who voted to cut fundings for women’s health were crystal clear about their goals: shut down every Planned Parenthood health center in the country. Now it’s up to the Senate to stop this attack on womens health. Planned Parenthood is a non-profit organization that has provided affordable contraception, medical services and abortions to women for the past 90 years (Applebaum). Lest they forget about the Hyde Act which was created by a Republican in 1976. The Hyde Act was passed by the House as part of the Department of Labor and Health, Education, and Welfare Appropriation Act in 1976, the Hyde Amendment prohibits appropriate funds to be expended on abortion except when the mother’s life is endangered by her pregnancy, rape or incest(Lowen). Why should you care? If funding for Planned Parenthood is not available it could affect you in many ways. Say you don’t have insurance; you may have to pay for a doctor’s visit to receive a prescription for birth control and pay full price at the pharmacy for it. Planned Parenthood takes care of them by offering birth control on a sliding fee scale. Or maybe these women who can’t afford to pay fully for birth control should suffer the consequences of their decisions and go through an unplanned pregnancy with no access to prenatal care (Roman). Depending on the location, you may lose access to free or reduced cost general services like anemia testing, cholesterol screening, diabetes screening, physical exams, flu vaccines, help with quit smoking, high blood pressure screening, tetanus vaccines and thyroid screenings. Sixteen percent of all Planned Parenthood health services are cancer screening and prevention, including Pap tests, HPV vaccinations and breast exams (Melanie).
