The History and Origin of April Fool’s Day April Fool’s day or “All Fool’s day,” is a non-traditional holiday that celebrates practical jokes and pranks in all of good humor and silliness. Many historians cannot pinpoint the exact origin of this holiday or how it started but there’s some theroies. In fact, “the most commonly cited theory holds that it dates from 1582, the year France adopted the Gregorian Calendar, which shifted the observance of New Year's Day from the end of March (around the time of the vernal equinox) to the first of January” (About.com). Basically, it was to tease the French who was slow to change the Gregorian calendar. Communication back in the day was not the best, though. The rest of the people didn’t receive the news about the calendar change for years. Other people that knew about the change was stubborn and tenacious and refused to accept the new calendar and continued celebrating New Years on April 1st. The general public labeled them “fools.” These “fools” were the object of ridicule and the butt of the practical jokes around the time of April 1st. In Roman mythology, Proserpina, the daughter of Ceres, was abducted by the God of the Dead, Pluto, and took her so she can live with him in the underworld. Proserpina was calling out to her mother, so Ceres went to search for her. “Fool’s errands,” or wild goose chases developed a popular practical joke in Europe.
