Pierre Auguste Renoir In 1841 a master of art was born in a city called Limoges. Limoges is a city west of France and known for production of porcelain. It seems so coincidental that a famous artist was born into a city so full of art culture. The sixth of seven children, Pierre Auguste Renoir is a person that will never been forgotten. He came from a humble background, his father was a tailor and his mother was a dressmaker. It was soon that Renoir started his journey as an artist; at age 13 he was employed to a man named M.Levy. Levy was a porcelain painter and saw talent in the young Renoir (Distal 207). Many would assume that Pierre was going to go on and become strictly a porcelain painter but the firm went out of business in 1859(Meyers 7). This event of Renoir’s life is crucial because from that point on, Renoir recognized his ambition to become a painter. After training for many years as a porcelain painter, in 1860 Renoir became a student of Charles Gleyre and enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux- Art School. It was in Charles Gleyre’s studio that Renoir met other young artists such as, Alfred Sisley, Frederic Bazille and Monet. Renoir discovered lasting friendships with each of these men and they were to become future impressionist painters. Besides some stylistic differences, these artists shared an interest in finding a technical mean to express individual sensation (Seiberling 151). It is said that Renoir and Monet had the closest friendship because they both endured a hard life in their earlier careers, but both men began to slowly achieve success for their work in the late 1870’s. This time period was the foundation of the group of men who were about to change art completely.
