Yhadira Tacury ENG 096 10:00 10/29/09 2nd Paper “The Flowers” “Flowers” is an appropriate title for Alice Walker’s short story, because she found a wild pink rose. The wild pink rose is different from the other flowers she picked. Myop’s reaction to the dead man is significant because a wild pink rose is growing on the dead man’s head. Flowers can represent happiness and love, kindness and gentleness, along with death and sorrow. Happiness and love are beautiful feelings.
Dandelions are also known to be happy flowers so this sets the mood in a more soothing and calming place. The poet also uses imagery to lighten the mood up. “And a jumble of skirts spilled onto the ploughed grass,” could be portrayed in a mental image of the clothes scattering around from the laundry truck. It makes the mood less tense because instead of rather describing the horrible images of the accident, the poet decides to describe the little details of it. There was also an internal rhyme in that line which was “skirts and shirts”.
Browning over-exaggerates the features and beauty of the nature of England almost making them come alive with her use of personification. The poem is very descriptive and also plays on all the five senses. She shows the sense of taste with the use of the word ‘sweeter’ in line 12, ‘ Made sweeter for the step upon the grass’ and also line 20, ‘Fed full of noises by invisible streams,’ the sense of hearing is shown using the word ‘noises.’ Browning also used the repetition to give the reader a sense of continuity. She shows that nature is evergreen and will be omnipresent in this world. This can be seen with the repetition of words like ‘the’ and ‘and’.

When you put those flowers around the district 11 girl, (I think her name was Rue) my friends and I thought that was just so touching. We were glad to see the tributes finally starting to care for each other. We just loved the part when you said, “Bye, Rue”(pg. 237) in a nice sad quiet voice. It was very touching.
Gwen Hardwood The emotive qualities of Gwen Harwood’s poetry resonate with her readers. She uses her own memories to illustrate love for her family, her loss of innocence and the swiftness of time passing. She demonstrates this in her poems Father and Child, The Violets and At Mornington. The poem The Violets opens with the line “It is dusk and cold,” the time of day symbolising that this persona has reached old age and is metaphorically drawing closer to nightfall or the end of her days. Death is made apparent with the negative adjective “cold.” The flowers she is picking at the beginning of this poem are clearly what stimulate her memory of childhood as they are referenced later in the poem.
