Picking Up a Monitor Lizard Monitor Lizards are beautiful and fascinating creatures, but their bite, tail muscles, and claws are all very damaging and possibly deadly. Nonetheless, if you own one or work with them should something happen to a monitor lizard, or you need to move it to a different enclosure you would still have to pick it up to restrain it, or move it. Picking up these large lizards is an art in itself and a very dangerous one if you don’t know how. These steps will teach you how to safely and carefully pick up a monitor so you or the reptile is not harmed. When moving a lizard, always have someone there with you. Having this person with you could save your life, if the lizard bites or whips you with its tail. Should one of these occur this person should be there to assist with the injury and let the lizard be until the person who is injured is okay, or taken care of. Before even entering the enclosure or approaching the reptile be sure you have everything you will need set up. If the lizard is in need of medical attention, be sure you have all medical supplies set up and ready to be used as soon as the lizard is in reach. If the monitor is just being moved from one location to another, before sure that location is completely set up, and ready to be inhabited before moving the lizard. Before continuing with any of the steps, you need to put on a pair of thick wielding gloves, or any pair of thick gloves, with will protect you a bit more and the bite will not be as deep. Always make sure the lizard is unsuspecting. Monitors are fast and strong and can easily whip around to catch you in its jaws. You need to be able to sneak up on the lizard in order to do all the steps correctly. If the lizard is facing you, wait until it turns away and is relaxed.
