Physical Exercise for the Elderly September 28, 2013 Physical Exercise and the Elderly Educational studies has proven that exercise increases memory and other brain functions. Studies also revealed exercise affects the quality of life within the elderly. A little more walking, stretching, or basic exercise can decrease chances of hypertension, diabetes, and even falls. Physical exercise have shown great improvement in mobility and the quality of life. Studies has been conducted within the community of senior citizens to see if physical exercise would improve their health. Within this paper, findings of how exercise, angiotensin-converting-enzyme (ACE) perindopril, and funding affects the senior citizens’ health. Physical function within the elderly have decreased, resulting in deterioration of quality of life and/or health status. A study using perindopril and a placebo was used to see if the quality of life within the elderly would improve. The ACE perindopril is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and help prevent heart attacks for people with coronary heart disease, (Weigman, n.d.). Within the study participants aged sixty-five or older were used. Participants could not have suffered from heart failure or left ventricular systolic dysfunction. Also, participants had to have mobility problems or functional impairments. They were given the ACE perindopril or placebo for twenty weeks. Ace perindopril helped. The results from participants taking the ACE perindopril were increased walking distance and time and participants reported increased quality of life. For participants taking the placebo, quality of life remained the same. Exercise or mobility did not decrease or increase. Perindopril was found not only to improve physical function, but also to prevent deterioration in health-related quality of life in functionally impaired
