Michael Holey Photosynthesis Lab Labs: Leaf Structure: A Highly Adapted Plant Parts, Observing Photosynthesis In a Living Model Background: Photosynthesis is a very important part of life. Without photosynthesis, life on earth wouldn’t be able to exist. Photosynthesis is the process where plants use sun energy and carbon dioxide to produce materials useful for life; it converts the light energy captured from the sun into chemical energy. Photosynthesis does three important things: It fixes carbon, creates oxygen, and converts sunlight to useful energy for all of life. This process happens in the leaf of a plant, and has two major parts: the Light Reaction, and the Calvin Cycle. Both parts play important roles in the process of Photosynthesis. Purpose: To help students gain a better understanding of photosynthesis and how it works. Procedure: Refer to sheet Materials: Refer to sheet (Additional background) Light reaction: Calvin Cycle: Data: Observing Photosynthesis in a living model- Plant length: 6.5 cm Miracle Grow: 20ml concentrated Amount of gas: Monday: 2.1 cm Tuesday: 2.7 cm Wednesday: 3.9 cm Friday: 4.7 cm Observations: (not available, will get to you on Monday) Questions: Observing Photosynthesis in a living model- 1. Write up the chemical equation for photosynthesis 6CO2 + 6H2O ==> C6H12O6 + 6O2 2. What reactants are needed for photosynthesis? H2O and CO2 3. What are produced by photosynthesis? O2, CH2O, and H2O 4. What is the energy source for the reactions completed during photosynthesis? Light energy from the sun. Leaf Structure: A Highly Adapted Plant Parts- 1. What is the function of the palisade layer in plants? It absorbs light needed for photosynthesis. 2. What is the function of the stomata? Its function is to allow gasses like oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water vapor to move freely into and out of the
