The process that uses light energy to synthesize something is called photosynthesis. In botany, photosynthesis refers to the combination of water and carbon dioxide to form carbohydrate. Plants are autotrophs. Water and carbon dioxide diffuse into the plants automatically from water, air, or soil. Since water and carbon dioxide are stable and have little chemical energy, much energy can be put into them. Carbohydrates are chemically unreactive, but they are stable. Wood and sugar release energy when burned, but carbon dioxide does not. Water and light create ATP and NADPH by light dependent reactions. In the stroma reactions, ATP and NADPH interact with carbon dioxide and actually produce carbohydrate.
The electromagnetic radiation spectrum contains gamma rays, x-rays, UV light, infrared light, microwaves, visible light, and radio waves. Radiation can be viewed as quanta or photons. Wavelengths and energy amount is what differentiate the types of radiation. Short wavelengths are cosmic rays, gamma rays, and UV. Long wavelengths are infrared, microwaves, radar, and radio waves. Short wavelengths have large amounts of energy, whereas long wavelengths have little amounts of energy. Carriers and pigments that work together are packed into photosynthetic units. These units contain 300 molecules of chlorophyll a and b and carotenoids. Thylakoids that lie between grana are frets. Stroma is the liquid that surrounds the thylakoid system.
The conversion of carbon dioxide to carbohydrate in stroma reactions are called the Calvin/Benson cycle. This takes place in the stroma. In the Calvin/Benson cycle, RuBP first reacts with a molecule of carbon dioxide. RuBP has only 5 carbons, and another from CO2. RuBP carboxylase is a large and complex enzyme. This enzyme has a molecule weight of about 480,000 daltons. In leaves, RuBP makes up of 30% of protein. 3-Phosphoglyceraldehyde is the basis of all animal metabolisms. This is because animals eat plants or eat other animals...
