Trevor Morris Spanish I Extra Credit Report 1-6-2012 Philip II was born on May 21, 1527 in the province of Valladolid. He reigned as the King of Spain from 1556-1598. He was the son of the great rulers of the Holy Roman Empire, Charles V and Isabella of Portugal. Philip II was King of Spain, Naples, Portugal, Sicily, England and Ireland. Spain reached its peak of power under the rule of Philip II. Although his fear of Islamic domination and the rising power of the Ottoman Empire caused him to lead an aggressive approach to his foreign policies. He banned the Protestant religion in every area that he ruled. He was brought up by Roman Catholic Clergymen and during his brief time as the King of England, he wanted to make England a Catholic country again. In 1543, Philip II married Maria Manuela of Portugal, his first cousin. His second marriage in 1554 to Queen Mary Tudor, also known as Bloody Mary, made him the brother-in-law to Princess Elizabeth I, who would later become Queen Elizabeth I. Philip II and Henry II of France signed the truce of Vaucelles in 1556. In August of 1557, his Spanish Army joined an alliance with English troops to defeat the French at the Battle of St. Quentin. Putting an end to the long series of wars between the Hapsburg and Valois dynasties, he signed the peace of Cateau-Cambresis with Henry II of France. In 1559, he married his third wife, Elizabeth of France. Months later, the grid plan was designed for the Escorial, an enormous palace being built in Madrid for Philip II. In 1561, he gave orders to halt the Spanish colonization effort in Florida. Later that same year, he moved his courts to the village of Madrid and named it the capital of Spain.
