When I think of my ideal job, I imagine having a flexible job in which I can provide for myself and my family, make enough money to live a comfortable lifestyle, have the opportunity to travel, and work with people while also benefiting others. My answer to this is, Pharmaceutical Sales. Frank Girard describes being a Pharmaceutical Sales Representative as a person who obtains information about medicinal drugs and then travels to introduce these products to different doctors, while marketing, selling, and increasing the value of a specific company. A Pharmaceutical Sales Representative gives people the opportunity to be self-driven. You develop relationships with different health care providers on your own time, while also maintaining contact with current medical professionals. Becoming a Pharmaceutical Sales Representative is very competitive. You must have a strong work ethic, excellent communication and sales skills, and you must be prepared for constant travel. In order to prepare myself for this I have chosen my major to be marketing. There is no specific degree needed to become a Pharmaceutical Sales Rep, but it is required that you have a Bachelors Degree. Julien Mirivel explains in his article, Reconstructing Merck’s Practical Theory of Communication, “that physicians who meet with drug representatives are more likely to add those drugs to their hospitals’ formulary, than physicians who do not meet with representatives from those companies.” From this statement you can see that being a pharmaceutical sales representative requires communication and sales experience. What better of a way to start off my career than by declaring myself as a marketing major? Marketing will help me understand consumer behavior and product development. With a marketing degree I will be well prepared for the rigorous training that being a pharmaceutical representative entails. I
