The latest from the pet front Lifestyle: The latest perk for pampered pets is a trip to a spa. Leading the trend is Biscuits & Bath Doggy Village, a five-story pet spa in New York City that features a pool, faux-grassy fields, salons, organic gourmet pet food, acupuncture, veterinary services, a kennel ("Lullaby Village") and a litter of "kitty condos." The spa, whose members include pets belonging to Sean "P. Diddy" Combs and hotel maven Leona Helmsley, doesn't cater solely to its four-legged patrons. Pet owners are treated to events such as champagne brunches and cocktail parties intended to encourage human love connections. A sampling of other pet spas across the country: Sam and Danni's Pet Resort and Spa in Sauk Rapids, Minn.; The Animal Inn in Santa Barbara, Calif.; and the Berry Good Health Emporium and Day Spa in Katy, Texas. Health: Veterinary surgeons have started using fiber optics to perform arthroscopic joint surgery on cats and dogs, lessening the stress that surgery puts on pets. Veterinarians are excited about the evolution of the technique, which once was relegated to large animals. "It represents a huge advancement for joint surgery in small animals. The scope magnifies everything, it offers a good light source, and it is minimally invasive," explains Andrew Sams, a surgeon in Corte Madera, Calif. Books: In the faux memoir "I, Toto" (Stewart, Tabori and Chang, $19.95), a famous pooch picks up a pen to dish about "The Wizard of Oz". With the help of human author Willard Carroll, the dog that played Toto shows her diva-like ego ("It's all about me! I'm in almost every scene!"), shares trivia (did you know Toto barks 44 times in the movie?) and details the little dog's exploits after exiting the yellow brick road for more film roles. A must-read for "Oz" fans and dog lovers
