Brandon Khoury Professor Newman COM 110 Section 26 Topic: NDAA Section 1021 Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience to realize the danger of giving the government this kind of power Thesis Statement: The Government keeps getting more powers while we lose our rights and our liberties. We should act for these unconstitutional acts and demand change before things get more out of hand. I. INTRODUCTION A. Attention material/Credibility Material: Imagine that your brother is just getting back from spending 4 years as a Marine. Well he gets back, your family is of course extremely happy. He gets to relax, have home cooked meals, maybe hit up some friends from high school, I don’t really know what your brother does. Anyways one day after a couple months of him getting home, he gets arrested and detained indefinitely because he is a threat of being a terrorist. You find out this is all because he made a political post on Facebook. This had actually happened to Brandon Raub, according to a “RenewAmerica post on August 23, 2012 titled Marine patriot detained for Facebook political posts” Gina Miller wrote he was a former marine who was practicing his first amendment right and was suspected of being a terrorist. B. Tie to the audience: The reason the government was able to do this was because of Section 1021 in the NDAA. This allows the government to arrest and detain indefinitely anybody who can be accused of being a terrorist without trial. This act is very unconstitutional and therefore needs to have something done about it. C. Thesis and Preview: Today I’d like to talk to you about first, the harm that has already been done because of this section of the NDAA, second, Why this is such a big issue, and finally, what can be done to solve this problem. [Transition into body of speech]: I’ll begin by telling you about the harm that has been done. II. BODY
