Research Paper Outline Topic: The minimum drinking age laws Names: B. Trivino Many children and young adults ask frequently why the drinking age is at 21. This has been a never ending debate between teens and the law. The drinking age was at one point lower then 21, it was 18; many can argue that there was no difference and others say it helps the society drastically. Each day an average of 11 American teens die from alcohol-related crashes , and approximately 5,000 each year. The minimum drinking age should remain at 21, because it will lower the death rate and will teen binge drinking. When it was changed to 21 however it has most certainly resulted in fewer accidents. According to The National Highway Traffic Saver administration the 21 law has saved 23,733 lives. (Robert Voas) New Zeeland lowered its drinking age based on the argument of lowering it. This resulted in a much larger # of traffic crashes and emergency room visits among 15 to 19 years old. Now because of this affect New Zeeland is now planning on raising their drinking age back to 21. (Toben Nelson) Another myth that has been sent around the children was that the reason foreign countries have a lower drinking age is because; from a young age they were taught the risks and responsibilities of being an alcohol consumer. Actually that is all wrong, the rates of frequent binge drinking among adolescents are higher in Europe than in the U.S. (Toben Nelson) Having the drinking age at 21 showed in 20 tests and studies that the amount of traffic fatalities and crash fatalities dramatically decreased. Three teens are killed a day when they drink alcohol and drive. About 6 children die more every day from other alcohol-related causes. (Brittany C. Trivino)Every year about 5,000 kids under the age of 21 died as a result of under aged drinking. This included 1,900 deaths from motor vehicle crashes, 1,600 homicides, and 300 deaths from suicide. Even young people who are usually emotionally stable may become despondent and impulsively suicidal when they are drinking.
